Summary

Once, in a cottage above the cliffs on the Dark Sea of Darkness, there lived three children and their trusty dog Nugget。 Janner Igiby, his brother Tink, their crippled sister Leeli are gifted children as all children are, loved well by a noble mother and ex-pirate grandfather。 But they will need all their gifts and all that love to survive the evil pursuit of the venomous Fangs of Dang who have crossed the dark sea to rule the land with malice and pursue the Igibys who hold the secret to the lost legend and jewels of good King Wingfeather of the Shining Isle of Anniera。

Andrew Peterson spins a quirky and riveting tale of the Igibys’ extraordinary journey from Glipwood’s Dragon Day Festival and a secret hidden in the Books and Crannies Bookstore, past the terrifying Black Carriage, clutches of the horned hounds and loathsome toothy cows surrounding AnkleJelly Manor, through the Glipwood Forest and mysterious treehouse of Peet the Sock Man (known for a little softshoe and wearing tattered socks on his hands and arms), to the very edge of the Ice Prairies。

Full of characters rich in heart, smarts, and courage, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness presents a world of wonder and a tale children of all ages will cherish, families can read aloud, and readers’ groups are sure to discuss for its layers of meaning about life’s true treasure and tangle of the beautiful and horrible, temporal and eternal, and good and bad。

Not a DNF, but I think I left this book somewhere and am unable to find it。 XDThe story was picking up where i left off at 89% and I hope to finish it soon。

This story has such wonderful world building and delightful details, but it suffers from uneven pacing and a clear, focused plot。

Sometimes hard to follow as you are introduced to an entire world and it's history but the story moves along well。 A great opening to the series which I look forward to reading all of。 Sometimes hard to follow as you are introduced to an entire world and it's history but the story moves along well。 A great opening to the series which I look forward to reading all of。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Normal kids trying to avoid the Fangs of Dang, but unintentionally finding trouble。 Tons of danger for at least one chapter, it dies down, but never loses that uneasyness in their lives, then heats up again。 The last ten chapters are amazing!!!!!!! Refugees from a fabled island? WOW!!!

I feel like the first few (very short) chapters were a little unnecessary and confusing but the story picked up quickly。 Love the sibling dynamics and unexpected twists!

Honestly you'll only really like this book if you are really into mythical creatures and childrens books。 I think this could be better at Harry Potter level but still great book Honestly you'll only really like this book if you are really into mythical creatures and childrens books。 I think this could be better at Harry Potter level but still great book 。。。more

This is an amazing story that is so creative and surprising。 I'll admit the extreme amount of puns were a bit of a tongue-twister to read out loud, although they added to the silliness of the world。 This is an amazing story that is so creative and surprising。 I'll admit the extreme amount of puns were a bit of a tongue-twister to read out loud, although they added to the silliness of the world。 。。。more

Read aloud to Cora。 Just enough silly and just enough serious。 Great book!

I enjoyed this read。 I listened to the audio book read by the author, and he did a great job with the narration。 It is a similar age level in terms of language and content as the Chronicles of Narnia。 The story is engaging and entertaining, with plenty of sprinkles of humor throughout that reminded me of Harry Potter。 Some of the themes that stood out to me are servanthood and humility, bravery, obedience and trust, love for family, and curiosity and adventure。 Though not a main focus, I also th I enjoyed this read。 I listened to the audio book read by the author, and he did a great job with the narration。 It is a similar age level in terms of language and content as the Chronicles of Narnia。 The story is engaging and entertaining, with plenty of sprinkles of humor throughout that reminded me of Harry Potter。 Some of the themes that stood out to me are servanthood and humility, bravery, obedience and trust, love for family, and curiosity and adventure。 Though not a main focus, I also thought the book touched on death in a very realistic yet compassionate and age-appropriate way。 The ending was satisfying enough to complete a nice story, but still leaves enough questions open that I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series。 。。。more

Devoured this in under 24 hours。 Peterson has an incredible talent of world building that is rare in this genre of book these days。 He is witty and creative and encourages and almost requires the creativity and imagination of his readers。 His quirky footnotes and appendices add a depth to this world of Aerwiar。 The plot and climax of the story was engaging and kept me interested for the entire read。 More people should know about this series。 Snaps to Andrew Peterson。

The scope of this story was much smaller than I thought it would be but it was nonetheless fantastic, especially for younger readers。 There is great character building and the reveals at the end make me interested in the next book。

We listened to this story as a family as we traveled cross country。 We found it funny, perilous, and engaging; although some of the characters were rather dense, at times。 We’ll likely keep listening。

A fun little book。 The story and writing and even world isn’t impressive, but it has some adventure and suspense。 I’ll read the next one。Might be a fun read to Malcolm when he’s older。 ;)

Briana

It was very slow and boring up until the very end。 I cant wait to read more of the series。

I read this aloud to my boys。 It kept me and the oldest interested。 The younger isn’t there yet。 There were many moments of begging for the next chapter。 I started to catch on to the clues and point them out, and he had fun trying to guess。 The revealing moment was priceless。 He could hardly stand the unanswered questions and looked to me to satisfy his curiosity。 He seemed to think I knew before ever reading it! Overall disappointed in this book, it had good characters but I dislike how things were named。 Particularly Fang of Dang was cringe for me。 Also they got captured too much most with no consequences。 It tried to do foretell but never really followed thru just hint something was significant but it wasn’t。 Additionally all characters reminded me of other books I read making them less unique and just a trope character

This was at least my fourth time reading this one and I enjoyed it more than I remembered。 I always tell people you have to stick with it and give it at least through the second book, as this one is the weakest of the four--but I found the humor in this one less over the top and annoying in this read than I remembered! I recommend just skipping the footnotes :) 14yo and almost-11yo are very into it。

Made it halfway through and still couldn’t get engaged。 May actually be a good book, just not for me。

4。5/5An enjoyable, light read。 The target audience is quite a bit younger than what I would normally enjoy, and I can only imagine how much I would have loved this when I was younger。 As it stands, I think this can still be enjoyable for older audiences, as long as it's approached with the right mindset (which is understanding that you're not the target audience)。 The characters are well created, and the story is fun and filled with some good thematic moments。I must say that the plot took a whil 4。5/5An enjoyable, light read。 The target audience is quite a bit younger than what I would normally enjoy, and I can only imagine how much I would have loved this when I was younger。 As it stands, I think this can still be enjoyable for older audiences, as long as it's approached with the right mindset (which is understanding that you're not the target audience)。 The characters are well created, and the story is fun and filled with some good thematic moments。I must say that the plot took a while to take off。 Initially it seemed like there were just a large number of unconnected happenings, which made it a bit of a struggle to get through the second act。 The last 100 pages or so flew by though, and connected everything in a really cool way。 。。。more

To say it was good would be an understatement, we absolutely enjoyed every bit of this story! Many nights I was begged to read more chapters! This first book was full of adventure, mystery, so much humor(I giggled a lot) and just good ole classic fantasy that kept us guessing。 As a mom I appreciate the normal family struggles a deceased father, the older brother struggles with his role as protector to younger siblings, faith and hope in the Maker and loyalty that perseveres through disagreement。 To say it was good would be an understatement, we absolutely enjoyed every bit of this story! However my 9 and 5 year old who are very compassionate we’re not bothered at all! Over all the message of hope in times of trouble was so inspirational。 We can not wait to start book two and find out where the Igiby families adventures will take us next。 。。。more

I started this book on an international trip a few years ago and had to give it back to the person I traveled with at the end after only reading like 25% of it。 I met up with him again and asked for it back and finally finished it。It’s a good easy book。 The characters feel real which i am finding is definitely the most important thing to me in a story and it is fairly funny (although not as funny as I remember)。 The twist at the end genuinely caught me by surprise as well which normally doesn’t I started this book on an international trip a few years ago and had to give it back to the person I traveled with at the end after only reading like 25% of it。 I met up with him again and asked for it back and finally finished it。It’s a good easy book。 The characters feel real which i am finding is definitely the most important thing to me in a story and it is fairly funny (although not as funny as I remember)。 The twist at the end genuinely caught me by surprise as well which normally doesn’t happen in kids books。 It didn’t blow me away by any means but I enjoyed it。 I may or may not read the rest eventually。 。。。more

This is my newest favorite series。 Do I care if it’s YA fantasy? No, I do not。 Also: please get the audiobook。 Peterson’s narration is masterful。

The author was the narrator (we borrowed the audiobook), and he did a mighty fine job w/ the accents/voices。 There was a lil too much detail for my liking (a bit Tolkien-esque in that regard) and sometimes too much repetition of actions/'looks' (to hint at or imply something), but the story was still engaging overall, and I felt the emotions were well captured。 The author was the narrator (we borrowed the audiobook), and he did a mighty fine job w/ the accents/voices。 There was a lil too much detail for my liking (a bit Tolkien-esque in that regard) and sometimes too much repetition of actions/'looks' (to hint at or imply something), but the story was still engaging overall, and I felt the emotions were well captured。 。。。more
